Surprise Twins!

What was the one experience that completely changed your life? What happened? How did it change your life?

When I was 24 years old I was surprised to find out that I was pregnant.  I wasn’t married and the person I had become pregnant by wasn’t really a permanent fixture in my life.  I had thought long and hard about what I wanted to do and finally came to the decision that I was going to keep my child.

I did everything right for the most part.  I went to all of my doctor appointments, took prenatal vitamins, ate healthy foods, etc., etc.  It was a difficult pregnancy.  I started showing at around 4 months, so couldn’t keep the pregnancy hidden from my boss, co-workers and friends for any longer.  I also was sick all the time.  Eventually I figured out that my morning sickness was being caused by an overdose of iron, so my doctor changed my vitamins to the low-iron variety, but this didn’t help with the steady stream of migraines.

When I was seven months pregnant I had to be put on bedrest because of some complications.  Then, at 36 weeks I went into labor.  I went to the hospital and they hooked me up to their monitors and tested my urine.  The monitor eventually came off part way, but they ignored that.  The urine test showed that I was starving to death, but I argued with them telling them that I was eating constantly (which I was, I couldn’t stop eating).  They eventually sent me home and told me it was false labor.  The contractions continued every 30 minutes for the next several days.  That was on a Saturday.

On Tuesday I had my regular doctor appointment.  I was 2 centimeters dilated at that appointment, but my doctor apparently didn’t think this was any cause for alarm.  (For the record, if dilation occurs, it means that it isn’t false labor, but actual labor.)

By Thursday at 5:am, I was in full-blown labor.  But my doctor still refused to let me go to the hospital.  By 10:30p.m. I told him I was going to the hospital whether he wanted me to or not.  A nurse checked me at the hospital and felt what she thought was a hand grab her finger.  She was thoroughly freaked out.  She knew something was wrong.  But still the doctor refused to come to the hospital.

By this point, I was delusional.  My blood pressure was so high, and my mother was very upset so the nurses shut off the monitor rather than upset her further.  I started talking to my brother who wasn’t even there.  Finally the nurse gave up and got another doctor to take a look at me.

They finally did an ultrasound (the first one of my entire pregnancy because my doctor didn’t want to lose any of his precious money by sending me to get one).  He determined that an emergency c-section needed to be performed because the baby was breach.  They also found what looked like four arms and four legs, but they weren’t registering what they were seeing.

Finally my doctor showed up, broke the water, placed a monitor on the baby’s head and argued with the other doctor about the ultrasound.  I lost it and kicked him out of the room.

As they were performing the c-section, they took out my beautiful daughter, looked down and realized there was another baby.  The nurses ran up and down the hallway, yelling “It’s twins, it’s twins!  We need another incubator!”

At that very moment, my life was changed forever.  Restful sleep became a thing of the past.  Self-fulfillment was non-existent. My whole world revolved around the lives of two beautiful human beings.
