Tear In Your Hand

He was home from college for break.  We sat in the car talking.  Eventually, he said, “I don’t love you like that anymore.”

I couldn’t speak.  My world fell apart in that instant.  A line from one of my favorite Tori Amos songs kept running through my head.  “It’s cutting my hands up every time I touch you.”

I kept praying for it to rain.  I wanted to stand in the rain so that it would mask the tears that I refused to show him.  Tears I refused to show anyone.  But the rain never came.  So I sat there in silence.

I started the car and drove him home in complete silence.  I couldn’t speak.  If I did, my voice would betray my heart.  I couldn’t say goodbye.
