National Chewing Gum Day – September 30th

The origins of this day are unknown, but chewing gum has existed in some form since the Neolithic period and Thomas Adams received the first patent on a gum-making machine in 1871.  The first flavored gum, Adam’s Black Jack, was created shortly after.

According to the Mayo Clinic, gum chewers can lose approximately 11 pounds of weight annually.  Nicotine gum has also helped some smokers quit smoking.

Some unusual uses for chewing gum are:

  1. Catfish bait
  2. Remove light scratches from a CD
  3. Make bubble gum sculptures
  4. Make a chewing gum curtain
  5. Make a non-slip hanger by placing chewing gum on both sides of hanger so clothes don’t slip off.

So, I hope you have fun on National Chewing Gum Day.  Comment below on what your favorite memory is of chewing gum or even just what your favorite brand/flavor is.  Thanks!
