Bat Appreciation Month – October

My daughter is going to love this one! October is Bat Appreciation Month, so I thought I would find out a few things about bats. Here are a few basic facts:

  • Bats are the only mammals that are able to fly.
  • A single brown bat can catch up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects per hour.
  • Fewer than 10 people in the last 50 years have contracted rabies from bats.
  • Bats use echolocation to get around in the dark.
  • The largest urban colony of an estimate of 1,500,000 Mexican free-tailed bats summers under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas ten blocks south of the Texas State Capitol.

So, take some time and learn a little bit about our furry flying creatures. It would be a fun Halloween project.
