Daily Prompt: Land of Confusion

Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.

I used to be the assistant manager at a store and all the other employees besides the owner were under the age of 21 at the time.  I remember one day just having a discussion with one of the employees about Wilson Phillips.  He looked at me with this blank look on his face like he had never heard of them before.  All the while I’m sitting there thinking that it wasn’t possible.  It wasn’t THAT long ago that Wilson Phillips was popular!  Well, I looked it up.  Wilson Phillips made their debut in 1990.  This kid mentioned that he was one-year-old at that time.  I was 16.

When I realized that I was biologically old enough to be his mother along with the mother of all the other employees I felt completely out of place.  How can you not?  It’s like going to a popular hot spot and realizing that the kids there could be your children.  You don’t belong there.  You aren’t “hip” or “hot” or whatever.  You are most definitely not “cool”.

Aging does that to you.  It sneaks up on you and hits you in the face with a hammer at the most unsuspecting moment.

I am a 43-year-old, single mom of 19-year-old boy/girl twins living in an extremely small town in rural Texas. Currently, I am employed as a Site Supervisor for a prominent corporation that provides security officers for homes and businesses.
