Career Choices

30-Day Bloggers Group:  November 19, 2013 Prompt:  Growing up, what career goals did you have or what dreams did you hope to accomplish? Did any of them come to be? How many did you abandon or revise along the way?

When I was really young I wanted to be a hairdresser like my mother had been for a while.  I outgrew that fairly fast, though.  Then, when I was fifteen, I worked as a receptionist for a law office so being a legal secretary or even a lawyer filled my head.  In the end I became an administrative assistant and worked for a variety of companies, but now I am currently unemployed.  However I have rediscovered my passion for writing along the way.  I’m thinking of going back to school to hone my writing skills and maybe even follow a career path in journalism.

I know so many people who spend so much money going to college to earn degrees and they end up not even working in the field that their degrees are in.  For instance, I know one person who went to school and got their degree in Philosophy.  They ended up working in advertising.  Another Philosophy Major ended up as an administrative assistant.  In fact, the only person I know who actually ended up working in their chosen field is now a lawyer.  It seems that lawyers, doctors and teachers are the most likely to use their degrees the way they were intended.  At least that’s the case with the people that I know.

There is nothing wrong with changing your course once you have set it.  Sometimes you just need to follow your bliss.  And, in today’s economy, sometimes you just need to take what you can get.

  1. i heard it said you make 8 career moves in a lifetime, one short of a cat, haha, but i#ve tried about everything, the chipper, the office, the school, and i’m still unsure about the word career, and what it means, basically, we are born to climb the tree, the one that is divine, so be careful what you wish for, cause something great is happening
